Ashley Young has signed a five-year contract with Manchester United on a fee believed to be around £15m to Aston Villa.

I am sure that United fans everywhere are celebrating this development. The club has been tracking the pacey left winger for a while and I am glad that the club are finally signing him. This bodes well not just for United, but looks to benefit England as well. Together with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck amongst others, manager Sir Alex Ferguson appears to be building his next team with a strong core of English players.

Does anyone remember the last time United had a pure left winger? When I first started watching football, Ryan Giggs had just taken over from Lee Sharpe on the left wing and since that time, I can only think of Jesper Blomqvuist. An argument can be made for Nani and Park but they are not left wing specialists. Young looks to be a worthy successor to the Giggs of old: He can tear apart defences with his dribbling, pace, ability to whip in dangerous crosses and score the odd goal. With Giggs still at the club, I’m sure he will be able to aid Young’s development.

Valencia has shown the value of width to United’s game and with this signing, United will be able to pose a threat down both wings. How do you see this playing out? Share your opinions in the comments section below.

Out of the Europa league, out of the Champion’s League next season, trophy-less this season, and with key players and manager looking likely to leave, Liverpool’s season of agony is coming to a close. An outstanding contrast to the way they finished last season, the question on all Pool fans’ minds will inevitably be “what went wrong?”

As the team trudged back onto the pitch to say their final farewells for the season with what must’ve been very heavy footsteps, the imminent fate of the club seemed reflected on all their faces. Indeed, from the minute Steven Gerrard provided Didier Drogba with his 26th goal of the season, Liverpool seemed certain of their destiny. The silence emanating from the Kop seemed to confirm that the sentiment was not shared amongst the players alone.

A start as sluggish as you’d ever see from a supposed top four club, Liverpool never looked like they would stand a chance. It didn’t help that Liverpool supporters all over the globe were torn between potentially allowing Manchester United to surpass their record, and retaining what’s left of their pride. Ultimately, sloppy defending and listless attacking made that decision for them.

As for Chelsea, they go up against Wigan, a team that despite their humiliating 9 – 1 defeat against Tottenham, beat Arsenal, Liverpool and, Chelsea. While it is true that the title is theirs to lose, Chelsea must be wary to avoid complacency, lest they suffer a similar fate as Arsenal.

Interesting fact: 75% of Liverpool fans in Singapore wanted Liverpool to lose.

Let me just start off by saying that I’m so glad I put Nicklas Bendtner in my fantasy premier league team this week. So often dismissed as an arrogant egotist, he’s showed real ability in this past week, netting a hat trick against Porto and scoring the late winner in this morning’s game. I believe my cynicism has been well documented, and well justified. However, it is starting to look more and more likely that I’ll eat my words.

The last ten minutes of the game against Hull reminded me of Manchester United. Their movement, sense of urgency, it resembled a United movement I like to call it. There was real intent to claim the 3 points, and while I disagreed with the substitutions Wenger had made, I was relieved that Denilson took that shot. He is possibly the only one, besides Arshavin, who would try from such a distance and actually test Myhill. And by resembling United, I mean they resemble champions.

Of course, taking into account that Hull was playing the entire second half with ten men, Arsenal probably should have finished them off sooner. Then again, Hull never should have had that penalty. And that brings me to my main problem. The pitch.

Firstly, the pitch looked utterly abysmal. Arsenal simply couldn’t play their passing game. The ball couldn’t travel fast or straight enough on the pitch. Secondly, I have a niggling suspicion that the addition lines on the pitch contributed to the amount of offsides missed by the linesman. The lines, and also the bad pitch, are remnants of the recent rugby league, and my theory is that it made the linesmen lazy. It served, at times, as a marker, and at times as a distraction. I’m not a big fan of last night’s referee either. Arsenal had 2 penalty appeals turned down in the first half. The first, I contend, wasn’t all that obvious. Nicklas Bendtner was sandwiched by two Hull players, and there could’ve been a hand to his face as he went down. But the second makes me scratch my head. Clichy is tripped in the area by a Hull defender. Anywhere on the pitch, that would’ve been a freekick. Credit duly given to Clichy for getting up right away.

Overall, it was a great game. It had everything: Goals, misses, injuries, bookings, a sending off, refereeing mistakes. Arsenal have clearly demonstrated their desire to win and their ability to do so. Before the game, Football Channel pundit Carlton Palmer said that he had no doubt that Arsenal would win the league. While I don’t share his confidence, it is looking increasingly plausible.

The word “drog” should be in the dictionary(no not the urban one). “Drog” – verb- Completely dominating one’s opponent in the style of an Ivorian footballing machine.

It was an all too familiar story at Stamford Bridge. Dider Drogba, 12 goals in 12 games against Arsenal. The man simply does not play his age. At 31, he’s still running with the pace of a 26 year old. There is no doubt that the Gunners are sick to the sight of him.

Prior to the game, Sir Alex encouraged Arsenal to batter Chelsea. Wishful thinking on the old fox’s part? Chelsea are now back on top, 2 points clear, and Arsenal’s titles hopes hang by a thread. But what exactly went wrong for the Gunners?

The 5 Could Nots

1) Arsenal Could Not Defend

Same old story. Set pieces are still Arsenal’s Achilles Heel. Disgraced former England captain John Terry lost his marker and rose to head the ball towards the far post, where Didier Drogba lost his marker to stab the ball home. 2 players, 2 markers lost.

For the second goal, Vermalen inexplicably left Drogba alone on the right. Perhaps he didn’t see Clichy speeding back to assist Gallas in the centre. Who knows? He could have stuck with Drogba and forced him to go wide, possibly preventing the concession of the second goal. Instead, he joined Clichy and Gallas in the centre and when the ball reached Drogba, there was only going to be one outcome.

They say a good keeper is worth at least 15 points in a season. Almunia, for me, is worth only 2. His defence does not seem to feel confident about him keeping goal. He has not earned the respect of his team mates, and that is where the problem lies. Arsenal need a goalkeeper who isn’t afraid to bark at his players and be the alpha male in defence. Peter Schmeichel did it. Peter Shilton did it. Edwin Van Der Sar is still doing it. And they have all won trophies with their respective clubs.

2) Cech Could Not Be Beaten

Too good. Cech was simply too good to be beaten. It was a brave Peter Cech, one that seemed to have been missing for the past few games. Last night, he claimed corners, dove at player’s feet, and demonstrated remarkable reactions to deny Arsenal again and again, notably Arshavin’s volley, the 1 v 1 with Nasri and Fabregas’ freekick. Almunia could take a page or two out of Cech’s book.

3) Wenger Could Not Read Carlo’s Tactics

The Italian job comes to mind. Carlo Ancelotti knew exactly what to do against Wenger’s Boys. He knew all too well that Arsenal’s big problem was not with passing, but with finishing off moves. Chelsea sat back and allowed Arsenal to play their passing game, and the moment Arsenal felt settled and comfortable enough, someone would nip in to steal the ball, and with lightning speed, a counterattack would be launched ie. Second goal. Mr Wenger, however, stuck to his guns. To be fair, Arsenal’s response after going 1 – 0 down was surprising, and quite pleasing. They looked hell bent on causing trouble for Chelsea. Arshavin, especially, looked in the mood for destruction. Sadly, it was not their day.

4) Walcott Could Not Play

Anonymous. That is the word to describe Theo Walcott last night. At times, I had to remind myself that he was playing. He could not pass, he could not run, he could not beat Ashley Cole. To be fair, he has been in and out of the side too much, and has not had sufficient play time to establish any sort of consistency. It was essentially 10 against 11 until Bendtner was introduced, who I maintain, should have started the game. I’m not the Dane’s biggest fan, but against a team of muscles, you need a big guy up front.

5) The Boys Could Not Beat The Men

Alan Curbishley, guest pundit on the night, made this excellent point. Chelsea have a team of men. Terry, Lampard, Malouda, Drogba, Ballack, Carvalho, Anelka, these are men who will grab the game by the scruff of the neck and make something out of nothing. Arsenal don’t have any players of that calibre. Cesc? Too soft. Arshavin? Too small. Nasri? Too small. Song? Too small. Walcott? Don’t joke. Echoing Patrice Evra’s comments last year, it was truly another case of Boys vs Men. Except the metaphor is more aptly used in this instance than that one.

Other notables:

Sagna cannot cross

Much of Arsenal’s game revolves around quick full backs making runs up the pitch and sending crosses in. Sagna’s crosses were so terrible, they actually made me wonder if Eboue would’ve done a better job.

Arsenal do not shoot

Pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass… ball’s lost. Arsenal fans should be familiar with that story. Too many passes, not enough shots. Arsenal need to take some risks. A low, angled drive could result in a pinball effect, and ultimately land in the back of the net. God forbid Arsene should encourage that sort of scoring method.

Drogba cannot be stopped

No explanations required here. Didier Drogba simply cannot stop scoring. It doesn’t seem like any defense in the league can handle him at the moment. And it’s not for the lack of trying either.

The truth is, Arsenal never looked like title contenders. Even if they did make a strong point at the beginning of the season, one must remember that there is a formula to creating champions. And Arsenal haven’t got it. A strong centre forward is still missing. A world class goalkeeper, a tall centreback and a defensive midfielder the likes of Patrick Viera. These are all elements that have been missing in Arsenal’s game for too long. Arsene can stick to his “beautiful football” philosophy, but last night, Chelsea’s passing left me breathless. It was quick, it was accurate, it was hard, and it was as pleasant to watch as anything Arsenal’s ever produced. With the transfer window shut, Wenger must attempt to manufacture a winning formula using his existing players.

The statistics tell another story, though. Looking at the numbers, Arsenal look like winners, like the better team. A wise man once said to me, “If you need statistics to tell you what’s good or bad, you’re probably not very bright.” Carlo Ancelotti’s Chelsea had a game plan that involved allowing Arsenal to play their way, and they worked it to perfection. As for Arsenal, it looks like yet another season’s title hopes down the drain.

Owen Coyle’s managerial debut for Bolton ended in a 0 – 2 defeat against the Gunners. The scoreline suggests an easy victory. It was anything but. To Bolton’s credit, they started the match brightly and nearly scored twice within the first 5 minutes. Arsenal, though intially stunned by Bolton’s aggressive approach and passing movement, regained their composure to take control of the match. It could easily have gone the other way though. What went wrong for Bolton?

1. Return of Cesc

Fabregas is, quite simply, a genius. Describe by our Football Channel pundits as being “from another planet”, he was virtually unplayable in the first half. Despite not being a vocal captain like Tony Adams, Cesc prefers to lead by example. His performance on the pitch speaks volumes and makes up for what his lack of verbal outbursts.

2. Matthew “Many Misses” Taylor

If Matty had been more composed, Bolton would probably have scored at least 3 goals. Instead, he fired the ball into the stands at least three times when it seemed easier to at least hit Almunia. It was surprising; one would expect much better for a player employed an incredible technique to score this wonder goal while playing for Portsmouth.

3. Owen Coyle Tactics

The different between Gary Megson’s Bolton and Owen Coyle’s Bolton could not have been more significant. Gary Megson’s Bolton was one I dreaded watching every week, mainly because they were so boring. Long ball tactics, physical play and lack of invention from every part of the pitch meant a long and dreary 90 minutes. Owen Coyle comes along and suddenly, it’s a brand new Bolton. However, the danger of playing Arsenal is that if you leave yourself slightly open, Arsenal will exploit it and punish you. And that is exactly what happened to them. Owen Coyle’s Bolton resembles his Burnley side: Good passing movement, good rhythm, aggressive offensive play, but too little behind to stop conceding goals. Owen Coyle must find the balance between offense and defense to ensure that teams don’t exploit the space his players leave behind.

Positives to note:

1. Ivan Klasnic

The striker was looking sharp. Spearheading much of Bolton’s attacks, he was a constant threat. Despite missing a couple of glaring opportunities, Bolton looked a lot more dangerous compared to when Elmander was leading the pack.

2. Craig Eastmond

The young midfielder played extremely well. While most young players making their debuts tend to avoid the forward pass for fear of misplacing it or losing the ball, Eastmond showed none of that. The future looks bright for this young man.

3. Fran Merida

Rumours are that Merida will join Athletico Madrid next season in an attempt to secure regular first team football. Judging from his performance, he does make a good case. Arsene Wenger will be looking to convince the youngster to stay after last night’s performance, but will he be able to offer Merida more first team opportunities?

Arsenal and Bolton face each other in the return fixture at the Emirates on Wednesday. Will Owen Coyle adjust his tactics? Will it be another inspirational performance from Fabregas? How many will Matty Taylor miss? I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I can’t wait to watch Bolton play.

A handful of first team regulars were uncharacteristically slotted into the FA Cup team by Arsene Wenger as Arsenal survived West Ham’s efforts to upset them. The Hammers looked to be in control and ready to apply yet another blow to Arsenal’s season after coming back from two goals down to draw earlier in the season. Diamanti, credit to him, was superb in attack. Behrami was another outstanding performer, constantly chasing down balls and launching tackles that would’ve made Patrick Viera proud. Robert Green was in fine form, at one point of time making an incredible save which prompted the commentators to ponder out loud if Arsene would consider buying him.

The match signalled Wenger’s intent to capture at least one trophy this season. The introduction of Diaby and Nasri was a smart move. Diaby provided the cover for Ramsey to get forward more, and Arsenal’s passing became noticeably slicker with Nasri’s influence. It may just be one of the more important victories for Arsenal this season. Coming from behind to win a game at Upton Park is no mean feat, especially with Gianfranco’s Hammer’s so intent on upsetting any team that approaches.

One big worry is the lack of manpower. Alex Song is already on the way to the African Nations Cup, which means changes have to be made for Wednesday’s trip to Bolton. Diaby would probably have to step into the holding role. Fabregas, Denilson, Eboue and Walcott are all unavailable, which means Arsene could go with Ramsey playing in Cesc’s role and Rosicky to complete the midfield threesome, while sticking with Eduardo, Arshavin and Nasri up front. Alternatively, Arsene could choose to unleash Wilshere, though I’m not sure how he’d fare against a team like Bolton.

Bolton, fresh off their victory against Lincoln City will be looking to frustrate. It is a torrid time for Gooners, one full of anxiety and uncertainty. It’s supposed to be a time where while Chelsea and Manchester United engage each other in a race for the title, Arsenal quietly go about their business and sneak up behind them. Now, with their top striker out, their holding midfielder away and a handful of regulars injured, it remains to be seen if Arsenal have what it takes to rough this period out.

A pair of Scandinavian stand outs as well as few MLS emerging stars headline Bob Bradley’s 30 man roster for the annual January training camp. Rising MLS stars, Omar Gonzalez, Chris Pontius and Kevin Alston will have the opportunity to show their skills to Coach Bradley ahead of the opening of camp on January 4th. The camp leads up to the first match of a vital year for the US Men’s National Team, against Honduras on January 23rd.

The January camp typically includes the best players from MLS as well as the Scandinavian leagues which are on winter break. This year, such stands outs include MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Zach Thornton, MLS Champions Nick Rimando, Robbie Findley and Kyle Beckerman as well as MLS Golden Boot winner Jeff Cunningham among others. In addition to their MLS compatriots, several Scandinavian players join the mix including, Marcus Tracy and Alejandro Bedoya who have earned a place on Bradley’s radar with strong seasons in their respective leagues.

Here’s the complete roster:

GOALKEEPERS: Kevin Hartman (Kansas City), Troy Perkins (Valerenga), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake), Zach Thornton (Chivas USA)

DEFENDERS: Kevin Alston (New England Revolution), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards), Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles Galaxy), Clarence Goodson (IK Start), Chad Marshall (Columbus Crew), Heath Pearce (FC Dallas), Marvell Wynne (Toronto FC), Brandon McDonald (San Jose Earthquakes)

MIDFIELDERS: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (Örebro), Geoff Cameron (Houston Dynamo), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Benny Feilhaber (Aarhus), Eddie Gaven (Columbus Crew), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Jeff Larentowicz (New England Revolution), Dax McCarty (FC Dallas), Chris Pontius (D.C. United), Robbie Rogers (Columbus Crew)

FORWARDS: Justin Braun (Chivas USA), Conor Casey (Colorado Rapids), Jeff Cunningham (FC Dallas), Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake), Marcus Tracy (Aalborg)

What are your thoughts on this roster? Who do you feel should have been included? Who should have been excluded?

It was an amusing night for most of us. 61 minutes into the match at Upton Park, Matthew Upson brings down Daniel Sturridge in the box. Our Football Channel pundits for the night, Trevor Sinclair and Carlton Palmer, voiced their disagreements at the end of the night. Both of them felt that because Mike Dean didn’t see the incident, and the linesman had his flag up, he had no choice but to give it. He also probably noted the reactions of the West Ham players and regretted the decision. Which was probably why he made Lamps take the spot kick three times.

Trevor also makes an excellent point when he says that if Mike Dean has seen an encroachment, he should have booked them the second time it happened. Most of the players were already on yellow cards, and would have seen red had Mike Dean decided to be even pickier than he was. Both Trevor and Carlton then come to the conclusion that Mike Dean was playing for the miss to make up for what he perceives as a bad decision on his part. Which does make sense when you notice that the third time Lamps takes and scores the spot kick, there was still an encroachment by a couple of players.

For the record, it was never a penalty against West Ham. Upson got the ball with a brilliant tackle, as seen in the slow-motion replays. It wasn’t a dive by Sturridge, nor the correct decision from the linesman (Carlton Palmer was so incensed, he called them “redundant”). Mike Dean should have stood his ground and waved the appeals away. Instead, he made a bad decision, regretted it within 5 seconds, and made a fool of himself by attempting to play for the miss. Lamps, to his credit, kept his cool to score all three times. But what if Lamps had missed the second spot kick? Would Mike Dean still have blown for encroachment? How big of a debate would it have sparked?

I guess we’ll never find out.

Thirty minutes before the Arsenal Liverpool game, my mate (a Liverpool fan) turns to me and tells me that we need a miracle to beat them. At the final whistle, he looks at me with a huge frown on his face and says that we had four. I personally don’t believe in miracles, so let’s try to clear things up.

Alleged Miracle Number 1: Howard Webb denies Liverpool a penalty after Gallas brings him down in the area.

Tricky from the very beginning. Did i feel it was a penalty when I first saw it? I was clutching my head, cursing at the telly, so yes. However, upon inspecting the replay, I noticed that Gerrard seemed to tap the ball forward a little too hard before Gallas slid in. My opinion is that if his touch hadn’t been so heavy, Howard Webb would probably have awarded Liverpool the penalty. The distance the ball covered after Gerrard’s touch seemed to insinuate that Gerrard was looking to be brought down, and that is probably why Webb didn’t give it. As Vermaelen put it during the post game interview, “the ball was miles away’.

Miracle? Hardly. It was either a poor touch or a poor idea from a player who’s just returned after 6 weeks out.

Alleged Miracle Number 2: Arsene Wenger’s Tirade

Did it really happen? Is it possible that one of the calmest and most composed managers in the Premier League blew his top at half time? Sounds more like Fergie’s Hairdryer doesn’t it. The fact is Arsenal’s first half performance was no worse than their performance at Chelsea. Why didn’t Arsene launch his tirade then? It appears that it took 135 minutes of poor football to push poor Arsene over the edge. Miracle? I don’t think so. You try being in his shoes and see how long you can hold it in.

Alleged Miracle Number 3: Johnson Own Goal

Indeed, I don’t think anyone would’ve expected Glenn Johnson to score an own goal before the match. He has been surprisingly sharp since joining Liverpool, scoring on a few occasions and creating in others. But the big problem is because he goes forward so much, he sometimes neglects his defensive duties. Running up and down the pitch for 90 minutes is no mean feat. When Arsenal broke for their attack which led to the equaliser, Johnson had to track back and while running, he looked tired and sluggish. The low cross came in from Nasri and Johnson inexplicably tapped it into his own net, with Walcott lurking. He could have easily put it out for a corner, but it seemed like he was too tired to realise where he was aiming for. Back of the net, equaliser for Arsenal.

Miracle? Definitely not. Poor decision making on Johnson’s part. If he had stayed behind during that play, he most certainly would have prevented Arsenal from equalising.

Alleged Miracle Number 4: Arshavin Wonder goal

4 against Liverpool last season. 1 last night. The man was born to score wonder goals. Quick first touch, almost no back-lift, and a powerful strike combined with the post to give Arsenal the winner. What miracle?

Did Arsenal deserve to win? Based on the second half performances of both teams, I’d say yes. But I’d attribute it partly to luck. This result will either be the turning point of their season, or just another pleasant result among many unpleasant ones. As for Liverpool, they are surely out of the title race now. I do believe, however, that they will turn things around. Its too late for the title, but a top 4 finish still beckons.

The inevitable has finally happened. After a series of good results, solid performances and goal-scoring exploits, Arsenal have been shaken awake. Dreams of Premier League glory looks to be in pieces after defeats against Sunderland and Chelsea, and even though Arsene Wenger claims that the Carling Cup isn’t a priority, defeat had to taste bitter. After all, it is the only trophy in which they stand a realistic chance in clinching, and the manner of defeat must have been hard to swallow.

Arsenal have a reputation for being self-destructive, particularly when they’re in good form. Of course, the untimely injuries to Van Persie, Clichy, Sagna and Walcott played a part in their dip, but i attribute most of it to complacency. In past seasons, whenever Arsenal have been in the lead in a match, they’ve somehow always managed to either squander it, or make it seem like they’re going to squander it. How many heart attacks have they caused already? Yet it seems like Arsene’s Adolescents never learn their lessons.

Another factor is their inability to finish. In past seasons, the phrase “trying to pass the ball into the net” had been used in almost every Arsenal game by the commentators. Their passing and movement were sublime, but without a natural finisher to complete the move, it was all hard work and no reward. This season, that seems to be less of a problem. However, the real test begins now. Van Persie will be out for almost the rest of the season, and the form Eduardo is in reminds me of Van Persie a season or two ago. Even if Arsene buys in January, is it enough to salvage their season?

It may seem like I’m making a mountain out of a molehill, but with Arsenal, no one can be sure. There was speculation that this could be the season for Arsenal. I say, there’s more work to be done.

It has been all about Thierry Henry and his “Hand of God” this past 24 hours. Articles, comments, they are everywhere, lambasting the striker for his role in the controversial equaliser. I am a Gooner, and Henry scored the goal which mesmerized me into pledging my allegiance to Arsenal. Without a doubt, he is my favourite player of all time. But i make it a point to be as impartial and objective as i can in my writing.

Firstly, it is true that there was no guarantee that Ireland would have won the tie had the goal been disallowed. As much as Ireland’s fighting spirit moved us, the numbers tell the whole story. 5 attempts at goal compared to France’s 15, with the shots on target statistics even more appalling , and 43% possession, the fact is Ireland were inferior. Yes, Domenech has made a mess out of the French team, and there is a good chance they may not even make it past the group stage, but on the night, statistically, they were the better team.

Now, onto Thierry Henry. Was i disappointed to see him do what he did? Absolutely, and i still am. After all, he has been a consistent advocate of fair play and anti-racism, and for him to do something like that is unthinkable. This is an excerpt of his post match statement.

“It was a handball, but I’m not the ref. I told (the referee) but he said to me the same: ‘You are not the ref.'”

The skeptic in me says he’s lying. But, if there was even the slightest possibility that he was telling the truth, would the blame not fall on the referee and his team of assistants? Therefore, it doesn’t seem fair to pile the blame solely on Henry. The ref did not do his job, and part of the blame must fall on his shoulders.

Henry is 32, and this could very well be his last World Cup. I urge you to look at it from his point of view. Nothing, absolutely nothing could justify robbing a nation of her chance to play in the World Cup. But, i’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m asking for understanding. The ball struck his hand, and right there, he had a decision to make. Play the ball and pretend nothing happened, or stop play immediately. He took option number one. And as soon as Gallas scored, he was faced with another moral dilemma. Speak to the ref, or let it go. According to him, he spoke to the ref but was waved away.

Sure, he played on after the handball. And he claims to have tried to overturn the decision. If we are to believe his words, does that not speak volumes about his honesty? I am sure that not many of us would have the courage to walk over to the man with the whistle and tell him, “I handled the ball,” and risk bearing the wrath of our colleagues, manager, and possibly our entire nation.

Henry now has a third decision to make. To do nothing about it, or pressure FIFA into forming a solution(read Kartik’s post below). To face three decisions of such magnitude is no easy feat for any man. And i can only imagine how mentally taxing it is.

So before we carry on berating him, calm down, have a nice cup of tea and think about it rationally. Give him a break and hope that he does the right thing for a sport he loves so dearly.

The Los Angeles Galaxy began the 2009 season at best as a team in transition, at worst as a team in turmoil. Despite initial problems, the Galaxy now stands only one game from winning the Western Conference. After dispatching city rival Chivas USA in what could only be called the “Battle of Los Angeles”, the LA Galaxy turn their attention to the next task at hand on the road to MLS Cup 2009 – the Western Conference Final against the Houston Dynamo (Friday, 8PM PST – ESPN2). After a three season absence, “The Flagship Club of MLS” is one match away from playing for the MLS Cup for an unprecedented sixth time. Before this dream can become a reality, the Galaxy must take on an experienced Dynamo side that is playing in their third conference final in four years.

Los Angeles won the season series with Texas based club (1-0-1) winning at Home Depot Center, 1-0 on June 29th, which snapped La Naranja’s team record 11 game unbeaten streak. Following the victory over then top of the table Houston, the Galaxy began their transformation from also rans – 2-3-9 before the match against the Dynamo – to the top club in the Western Conference with a 10-3-3 tally after the win. This dramatic turn around can be attributed to the influence of newly named Coach of the Year Bruce Arena, who instituted a personnel change such as the addition of former US international defender Gregg Berhalter, who brought in a winning mentality into the team as well as a wealth of experience for the Galaxy’s myriad of young defenders.

“The attitude is better (under Arena), you always hear the team buying in to the coaching philosophy and that is exactly what we have done here. I can’t remember a time this year that a player has stepped up to management due to a lack of playing time. We all respect the decisions of Bruce (Arena) and Dave (Strachan) and are ready when called upon,” said forward Landon Donovan in a recent teleconference.

The improved chemistry in the locker room can only serve to help the Galaxy in what is sure to be a contentious 90 minutes. The last match these two played against one another was a heated affair that saw Brian Ching sent off after a ruckus caused by a challenge on Ricardo Clark by midfielder David Beckham. Over the two legs of the regular season series between the teams there were a total of 9 yellow cards as well as the one red card issued for violent conduct to the Houston forward.

One of the major impediments to Galaxy’s progress will be Brian Ching, who scored the series winning goal against the Seattle Sounders in the first overtime on Sunday, putting the Dynamo in the West Final. The captain of the Houston Dynamo has enjoyed a very successful season picking up several honors including the Dynamo’s Golden Boot for leading the team in goals scored with eight. Despite the danger that he poses, Ching is a familiar entity for Arena, who coached the Hawaiian forward during much of his career with the United States Men’s National Team.

“He’s a complete goal scorer and requires complete concentration from your back line. Brian is a true goal scorer, he can be hiding for certain segments of games but when he has an opportunity to jump on a chance, he’s there as we saw last game against Seattle. Overall, He’s a proven goal scorer in big games and we have to be really focused on the challenge of dealing Brian on Friday night,” said the 2009 MLS Coach of the Year.

Ultimately because of their improved chemistry and cohesion on the field, Los Angeles is on the brink of their sixth appearance in the MLS Cup Final.

Recently, an article by ESPNSoccernet was brought to my attention by one of our faithful readers about the Reserve league in England. The Premier Reserve League is a valuable resource for clubs in the Premiership. Each club in the Premier League is able to play in the top league against the reserve clubs from other members of the top flight. It offers teams a chance to give fringe players a run out and give players returning from injury, a competitive environment in order to integrate them to game shape. However, this season, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has thrown caution into the wind by removing his reserve team from the PRL and instead chosen to maintain a large squad with players most on the fringe being sent out on loan.

Redknapp believes that the move gives him a much greater mobility when it comes to his personnel.”You are restricted when you have reserve fixtures set in stone and it means some players are rushed back from injuries or played in games they could do without,” he states. “What we have now is a little bit more control over what we want to do with our players.” What this increased mobility means is that Redknapp is now in complete control of where his back up players are rather than being a slave to the fixture list.

In order to prevent his players on the periphery of his squad from losing their sharpness, Redknapp has decided to employ what could be called a “shadow squad” on loan to football league squads. “The lads we sent out on loan last year benefited greatly from their experiences and came back to Tottenham as better players. That’s the target we have for this season. Young boys need to get games to improve and playing in a competitive league is more beneficial for their development,” said the Tottenham manager.

Redknapp believes that sending Spurs players on loan at smaller teams will help improve the club’s prospect by giving them meaningful games in the Football League. Despite Spurs apparent success with this tactic, an important fabric of English football – the lore of the lower leagues is at stake. In England, lower division clubs are fiercely supported by fan bases who dream of having their team in the first division. This is a stark comparison to Spain in which “B” sides for La Liga clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona compete against up and coming teams on the second rung of Spanish football. These clubs are supported exclusively by the fans of their parent organizations which prevents the same type of romanticism that one sees in the lower divisions of England.

The danger of Redknapp’s actions are turning lower division clubs into feeder clubs for those in the top division. This move by Tottenham places the current football league system at risk by placing English football at a cross roads. If more clubs decide to take this route, England’s lower divisions could be stocked with fringe players of top division clubs rather than growing their own talent. Although these smaller teams would reap the immediate rewards of this exercise, their fans would be unable to create long lasting bonds with their own players. Gone are the day’s of a player rising through the ranks of his hometown club and staying there for the duration of his career and instead a troubling new dawn is on the horizon of British football.

So yet another installment of the fiery North London derby has passed. Tottenham, missing Jermaine Defoe through a suspension and Aaron Lennon through injury, looked a shadow of the side which threatened to take over one of the top 4 spots earlier in the season. Arsenal, on the other hand, were magnificent. Their movement was splendid, passing was superb, and unlike last week at Upton Park, they managed to keep their heads straight and maintain a clean sheet. People will be talking about this one. Were Arsenal too good? Or did Tottenham self destruct?

Both Ledley King and Heurelho Gomes were at fault for the first goal. They should have handled Sagna’s crossed better; it was a rather tame one. King managed to allow Van Persie to sneak in and put a foot on the ball and Gomes just did what he did best. Not save the ball. Credit to Van Persie though. He has looked so sharp this season; always chasing down balls, getting into good positions, fighting to win the ball. There is an intent that wasn’t present last season.

I hardly had time to start singing “One Nil to the Arsenal” when Fabregas practically took the ball past the entire Spurs midfield and drilled one into the corner. Again, could Spurs have done better? Definitely. Upon closer inspection, it seemed like none of the Spurs players thought Fabregas’ run would amount to anything. Quite an unwise bit of underestimation, considering the form Cesc has been on. Gomes, again, like the rest of his team, could have done much much better.

At the other end, Bentley had a decent free kick tipped over the bar. However, at one point of the game i caught a glimpse of the shots on goal by each team. Arsenal had 15 at the time, Tottenham a measly three.

Finally, the last goal, which really was due to abit of confusion between the players and the referee. Mr Clattenburg had played the advantage but everybody was expecting play to be pulled back. Sagna reacted first, launching a low cross in for Van Persie to slot in off Ledley King.

Being a Gunner myself, I can’t say how delighted i am with this result. It is afterall, the North London Derby. However, the performance left me wondering, what if Defoe and Lennon had been eligible to play? With Lennon adding width and Defoe adding a sting to the side, would the early pressure have been enough to shake up Arsenal’s young hearts. At the start of the second half, Spurs did enjoy a short spell of pressure after ‘Arry switched things up abit.

Just like it was too early for Robbie Keane to count his chickens before they hatch, it would be too early for me to call Arsenal genuine title contenders. They always seem to do well at the beginning before either complacency or a lack of concentration sets in. For our sakes, i hope they maintain this run of form. With them providing such a wonderful quality of football, I hate to imagine what we would have to turn to for entertainment come Premiership Weekend.

A capacity crowd of 35,807 at Quest field in Seattle saw a match that contained 6 yellow cards (3 for each side) and countless missed opportunities on both sides. Although the ferocity of the game earned many of the headlines, the story for the Seattle Sounders was one of wasted opportunities.

As was the case so many times this season, the Seattle Sounders main impediment on Thursday evening was the fact that they were unable to convert upon the chances that the team earned. Their best chance coming off a Patrick Ianni header was cleared off the line by Dynamo defender Brian Mullan in the 14th minute. The main culprit of this lack of finishing was Seattle’s Colombian forward Fredy Montero, who was anemic in front of net. Montero’s best chance to score came in the 61st minute, with a beautiful turn in front goal that beat Houston defender Geoff Cameron. The Sounders striker found himself one on one with Houston Goalkeeper Pat Onstad, but pushed the effort just wide. In addition to the lack of the finishing, Montero quickly found that in the playoffs MLS officials are far less willing to call fouls than in the regular season, as the striker’s attempts to draw a foul were unheeded.

Following the match, Sigi Schmid had this to say about his embattled forward, “Fredy was sick on Tuesday. He trained Wednesday, but was still feeling the after effects. I said give me as many minutes as you can.” However, Schmid was optimistic about the Sounders chances to break the Houston defense, “They were tight and pressured us. Maybe we need to get into the spaces behind. Roger (Levesque) got in behind them three or four times and that’s where the space is. If we can put the ball behind them, it creates problem,” said Schmid.

In order to become the second expansion franchise to qualify for the Conference Finals, the team will need a big game from the club’s pair of Fred’s Ljungberg and Montero if it is are going to win the biggest match in the club’s short history. Seattle will not be provided many chances against a Houston team that was 7-2-6 at home this season, which included a hard fought 1-1 tie against the Sounders on August 23rd. Speaking after the match, forward Nate Jaqua was defiant about his team’s chances going into Robertson Stadium.

“We had a few chances that we could’ve put away. But we have been good on the road. We are confident going down to Houston and getting a win down there.”

It’s impossible to travel in Los Angeles on a Sunday evening without seeing the beautiful game being played by people of walks of life, income levels, and ethnic backgrounds. In this sprawling metropolis, there are two teams that rule the soccer scene, David Beckham and Landon Donovan’s Los Angeles Galaxy and los rojiblancos of Chivas de Guadalajara. One team is conspicuously absent, the red and white of MLS club Chivas USA. Although the MLS Club has been around for five years, the team has been unable to make a big impact in the already crowded Los Angeles sports scene drawing an average of just over 15,ooo at Home Depot Center, a stadium with 27,000 capacity. They’ve also been unable to generate success on the field against their cross hallway rivals winning the season series against the Galaxy only once (2007) through their half decade existence. However, the club affectionately known as the Goats has its best chance yet to make an statement in their home town by drawing the Los Angeles Galaxy in the first round of the 2009 MLS Playoffs with the first game on November 1st on ESPN2 at 2pm PST.

“I think the Galaxy get a lot of credit since they were the original LA team and to play against them in a game of this magnitude, it’ll be a big event. It’s going to be a great opportunity for the brand of Chivas to be seen and if we do well and win then it will only help promote Chivas and Chivas USA as a whole,” said defender Jonathan Bornstein. “It’s always good to have respect from the local fans and the Galaxy have been around a lot longer and we’ve had to bad with that. I think that just in general a victory will help us be known.”

Chivas USA “earned” the right to play their cross hallway rivals after a disappointing performance 3-2 loss to the Dynamo in which Houston took a 3-0 lead before Chivas USA fired back with 2 quick goals by Michael Lahoud (his first goal for the club) and Eduardo Lillingston to bring the score back to respectability. The result meant Chivas USA would finish the season fourth in the Western Conference with 45 points to give them a date with the Western Conference top seeded Galaxy, the first ever playoff meetings between the two clubs. However, the Blue and White were a team that the Goats struggled mightily with this year, posting a 0-2-1 record in three games against LA while failing to score a single goal against their rivals.

Despite the failures of Chivas this year against Los Angeles, Head Coach Preki was defiant about his team’s chances. “The Galaxy had the better of us this year and they’ll be favorites but I think we’ll be ready to play,” said the former US national team star.

Although the team has failed to get through to the second round of the playoffs despite three straight playoff appearances, there is a sense of optimism in the locker room about this particular group of players. “I think we’re prepared, we showed that we can play at a high level for a stretch of the season, that’s all we need to do is to get hot at the right time and we have as good a chance as anyone to make a run to the title,” said Chivas’ standout Goal keeper Zach Thornton.

A win in El Clásico Angelino will not only help the team by putting them one win away from an MLS Cup berth but may also help make people in MacArthur Park, San Fernando, Pasadena and across the Southland more aware of the “other” team in Los Angeles. Perhaps it was Preki who put it best,”Hopefully we’ll see a full stadium and a good atmosphere with good football so at the end of the day I feel that everyone should be excited.”

Indeed with a win, the opportunities are endless for the Rebaño Angelino to finally make their claim to fame in the City of Angels.

“Yes, I did. Sometimes when you are in the middle of an action and you get a little push and you know there’s nothing more to take. Then you are in the right to show in a way to the ref that you are pushed. That’s not really diving. It’s just showing … ‘Come on, he just pushed me, so I can’t score now.’

Oh Robin. Is this really the best time to be talking about you exaggerating your falls? Isn’t the vilification of Eduardo enough punishment for Arsenal fans to take? Have you not learnt anything from him?

Is there anyway, under any circumstance, at anytime, where we could condone diving? Van Persie vindicates himself by saying that the foul was deserved since he was impeded and illegally denied a goal, but it isn’t really for him to decide whether the foul was deserved or not is it? Thats what referees are paid to do; judge if a foul really is a foul. He claims to be against diving, does he not practise it? Even if its just to show that it was a foul, if he had to ability to stay on his feet but went down anyway, does that not constitute diving?

Sure, we’ll give him credit for being honest. But sometimes, honesty isn’t the best policy. The media will hound him. The players and the fans will lose respect for him. The most dangerous thing about diving is that if it works the first time, you’ll be tempted to do it again. And again. And again. Van Persie has come out and admitted it before the public catches him, but does it means that when we do catch him, that statement and his honesty will fully justify his actions?

All over the world tonight, people are cheering on their respective national teams. The Slovenians, the Georgians, the English, the Danes, just to name a few. As a citizen of a country with a lowly rank of 127 on the FIFA World Ranking table, I should probably feel a little bit sorry, a little bit jealous, possibly a little bit angry over the fact that my country has barely moved up the rankings at all over the years. I know a few people who feel that sort of resentment, who feel that they are the unluckiest citizens in the world.

Here in Singapore, we take things in our stride. Our nation can’t make the World Cup? No worries, we’ll pull on the jersey of another country and sing their praises. That’s the way it is and has always been in sunny Singapura; you can’t beat them, join them.

What is Singapore all about? Go online and look for a video of Liverpool FC against Singapore on 26th July 2009. 55,000 Singaporeans cramped into a stadium watching their country go up against one of the English giants and with all the enthusiasm and passion they can muster, they raise their voices and break into choruses of…. “You’ll never walk alone…..”

I’m not complaining. After all, I myself have been an Arsenal fan for years and if Arsenal were to come to Singapore to take on the national team, i’d probably be the first to pull on an Arsenal jersey. My point is, even though we’re halfway round the world, our passion cannot be doubted. While we may not have grown up in the area, while we may not speak with an accent, while we may not have ever gone to any home games, we remain as passionate as anyone can be.

If you ever get the chance, come to Singapore. Walk around Clarke Quay at about 2030 on a Saturday and listen to the noise generated by people watching BPL games and i promise you, you’ll feel right at home.
